License Plate Recognition (LPR) – Lot 19

Miami Parking Authority (MPA) is introducing License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology in Lot 19 to improve customer convenience, enhance operational efficiency, and ensure fair enforcement.

LPR technology is widely used in public and private parking facilities across the country and internationally to create a smoother, more reliable parking experience.

How the System Works

  1. Entry Capture
When a vehicle enters Lot 19, a camera captures the license plate and records the time of entry.
  2. Payment Window
Customers have a 20-minute grace period. If a vehicle remains longer than 20 minutes, payment can be made using the designated parking payment app.
  3. Payment Process
Payment can be made using the designated parking payment app. The system links payment directly to the vehicle’s license plate.
  4. Unpaid Sessions
If a vehicle remains in the lot for longer than 20 minutes and no payment is made, the system will flag the vehicle and automatically generate an official Miami-Dade County parking citation, which will be mailed to the registered vehicle owner.

All data is securely stored and used strictly for parking access and enforcement purposes.

Why MPA Is Installing Cameras

  • Improved Traffic Flow: Reduced congestion in high-demand areas improves overall mobility.
  • Environmental Benefits: Less idling and circling reduces emissions.

Customer Benefits

  • Fair Enforcement: The system ensures payment is required only when necessary.

Privacy & Camera Use

MPA’s License Plate Recognition (LPR) cameras are used solely for parking access and enforcement within designated public parking lots. The system records entry time, links payment to a vehicle’s license plate, and generates citations for unpaid sessions. It does not track vehicles outside the parking facility or serve as general surveillance.

All data and images are encrypted and securely stored. Information is retained for a limited period, managed in compliance with Florida public records laws, and is never sold or shared unless required by law.
