License Plate Recognition (LPR) – Automated Enforcement
Miami Parking Authority (MPA) is expanding its use of License Plate Recognition (LPR) and camera-based technology to help address vehicles that stop, stand, or park in active traffic lanes and designated bike lanes.
The program is designed to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and unsafe lane changes, protect cyclists and pedestrians, and help keep active travel lanes clear and safe. LPR technology is widely used across the country and internationally to support efficient, reliable, and consistent parking and traffic enforcement.
Where Is Camera Enforcement Being Used?
The technology is currently being installed in two locations:
- Downtown Miami
- Brickell
- Miami World Center
Additional locations may be added as MPA continues expanding its camera-based enforcement program.
Why MPA Is Installing Cameras
- Improved Traffic Flow: Helps keep active travel lanes clear and reduces congestion caused by stopped or parked vehicles.

How the System Works
- Vehicle Detection
Camera technology identifies vehicles that stop, stand, or park in active traffic lanes or designated bike lanes. - Violation Review
The captured information is reviewed to determine whether a qualifying violation has occurred. - Citation Processing
When a violation is confirmed, the registered vehicle owner may receive an official Miami-Dade County parking citation by mail.
All data is securely stored and used strictly for enforcement purposes.
Time Limits and Citation Enforcement
Vehicles stopped in an active traffic lane may receive a $124 parking citation by mail. Vehicles parked in a designated bike lane or no-parking area may receive a $46 parking citation by mail.

Official Citations
Miami Parking Authority issues official Miami-Dade County parking citations for qualifying traffic lane, bike lane, and no-parking violations.
Official Parking Citations Include:
- MPA name, logo, and address
- License plate number
- Date and time of the violation
- Amount due
- Secure payment site
- Official Miami-Dade County citation number
Customers should only make payments using the instructions provided on citations bearing the official MPA name and contact information.

Privacy & Camera Use
MPA’s camera technology is used specifically to support enforcement in designated traffic lanes and bike lanes. The system captures vehicle information needed to identify and document qualifying violations and is not intended for general surveillance.
All data and images are encrypted and securely stored. Information is retained for a limited period, managed in compliance with Florida public records laws, and is never sold or shared unless required by law.

Citations & Payments
A: Official citations always display the Miami Parking Authority (MPA) name, logo, and address, along with a secure payment link. If you receive a notice from another company, it is not an official Miami-Dade County parking citation.
A: If the citation is not paid within 30 days, the fine amount will increase.
As stated on the citation, failure to pay may also result in additional penalties, including denial of vehicle registration renewal, impoundment or immobilization of the vehicle, and referral to a collection agency. Additional collection fees may apply, as authorized by Florida law.
A: Yes. The Clerk of Courts payment portal is fully encrypted and managed directly by the County.

Privacy & Camera Use
A: No. License Plate Recognition (LPR) cameras only scan your license plate to:
• Vehicle license plate information.
• The location of the violation.
• The length of time the vehicle remains in the restricted area.
• Information needed to process a parking citation.
*They do not track vehicle movements beyond the designated enforcement area.*
A: MPA’s LPR system is designed with privacy in mind.
• Cameras capture plates only in designated enforcement areas — not homes, interiors, or individuals.
• The system is used only for parking access and enforcement, not for general surveillance.
• All data and images are encrypted.
A: All data is managed in compliance with Florida public records laws.
• Retention: LPR data is stored for a limited period before being deleted.
• Public Records: Data is subject to Florida public records laws.
• No External Sharing: Footage is never sold or shared with outside entities unless required by law.
